ANAMMA: light: verb (used with object), light·ed or lit, light·ing. to set burning, as a candle, lamp, fire, match, or cigarette; kindle; ignite.
Light a candle, to remember the ones that are gone, for our wish to be granted, to feel safe.
An act that has been inner call of the men all over the world from the dawn of time.
In order to connect, to summon, to be heard by the unknown, your God of choice, starts with lighting a candle, a lantern, a lamp. For a reason that cannot be explained kindling this little flame creates a communication channel that nothing else could.
Lighting this tiny fire that will bring you closer to your deepest wish has its cost. The oil, the beeswax is a small sacrifice, an offering to the higher power on the other side to hear you. Maybe a way to ease the uncontrollable power of fire under the illusion you can tame it.
Nowadays the offering is converted to paraffin candles which are trembling next to multi watt lamps and is mostly used for romantic dinners and relaxation moments. Nevertheless on a moment of need, lighting a candle and pray, ask, wish is still an inner need. Matter of habit? Perhaps, but never mind to explain.
The fire, the all mighty gift Prometheus gave to humanity with such a huge cost, has been so difficult to be tamed and useful. With this divine gift 33 ceramicists create, fight, conquer and try to placate as their ancestors did for 8000 years.
33 pieces of art, 33 non electric lighting pieces burning candles or oil.
33 versions of the above ritual by 33 unique artists
